Recent executive orders and shifts in U.S. federal policy pose significant concerns for the research community, including the removal of publicly available data, changes in research governance, and uncertainties around funding. While some policies claim to promote transparency, their selective application risks undermining scientific integrity. True openness must apply across all research domains—not just where it aligns with political agendas.
COS remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting and promoting open scholarship. Ensuring long-term access to research data is essential to maintaining scientific integrity. Our Open Science Framework (OSF) remains a reliable resource for researchers seeking to preserve and share their work, ensuring that public knowledge remains accessible despite policy uncertainties. Additionally, as part of our broader commitment to sustainable open research infrastructure, COS has joined Invest in Open Infrastructure’s Statement of Support for a Global Research Ecosystem, reinforcing the importance of strong, open infrastructure worldwide.
We are actively monitoring policy changes and working with partners to assess their impact on research integrity, funding, inclusiveness, and accessibility. Initiatives like Internet Archive’s End of Term Archive, ICPSR’s Data Lumos, and the Data Rescue Project provide important resources for preserving public research data, and we encourage the research community to engage with these efforts.
