Charlottesville, VA - The Center for Open Science (COS) is pleased to announce the recent appointments of Matthew Buys (DataCite), Adib Choudhury (Evergreen Services), and Damian Pattinson (eLife) to the COS Board of Directors for three-year terms. Each brings impressive experience and strategic leadership across a range of areas that aligns well with COS’s mission, vision, and activities.

Matthew Buys is the Executive Director of DataCite, a nonprofit organization working to ensure that research outputs and resources are openly available and connected so that their reuse can advance knowledge across and between disciplines. Based in Amsterdam, Matthew focuses on building DataCite into a sustainable global community. Matthew is also Vice-Chair of the DOI Foundation. Previously, Matthew was the Director of Engagement at ORCID, where he played an important role in growing the community into an international-scale research effort.

“I am thrilled to join the COS Board of Directors, and I eagerly anticipate collaborating with fellow board members to further promote openness and transparency in scientific research,” said Buys. “Together, we can drive meaningful change and enhance the integrity of the scientific community.”

Adib Choudhury is Senior Associate at Evergreen Services Group, a private-equity backed holding company focused on acquiring services and software companies and holding these businesses indefinitely to invest in long-term growth, sustainability, and impact.

Apart from his role at Evergreen, Adib currently serves on the Executive Committee at the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, where he gained significant experience as Committee Chair of the Budget & Finance Committee. Adib has worked for software companies and two private equity portfolio companies, which will give COS an additive perspective for scaling its OSF infrastructure, operating models, and ongoing large-scale operational change.

Damian Pattinson is the Executive Director of eLife, an independent nonprofit with a mission to help scientists accelerate discovery by operating a platform for research communication that encourages and recognises the most responsible behaviors in science.

Damian obtained his PhD in neuroscience from University College London, UK, where he studied the development of sensory pathways in the laboratory of Professor Maria Fitzgerald. After a postdoc at King’s College London, UK, Damian joined the BMJ as Scientific Editor on BMJ Clinical Evidence and BMJ Best Practice. He joined PLOS ONE in 2010, first as Executive Editor, where he oversaw the rapid expansion of the journal, and then as Editorial Director. He then moved to Research Square as VP of Publishing Innovation and led the development of the Research Square preprint platform, before joining eLife in 2020.

“I am delighted to welcome Matthew Buys, Adib Choudhury, and Damian Pattinson to the COS Board of Directors,” said George Banks, board chair. “Each of them brings expertise in areas critical to COS as it continues on its impressive path for growth and impact. We are all looking forward to their contributions to our shared work of enhancing openness, integrity, and reproducibility in science.”
